Regarding the security course being a cover story: I can see why this is probably the case but my instinct says that it needs looking into. A lot of people went to Bolivia and most of them returned. That's a lot of investment just to establish a cover story on behalf of the few that remained. Whilst it's very possible that it is a cover story and that the real reason was the offering of a well paid merc job, that turned out to be an effort run by gobshítes, I think it's an avenue that still needs investigating. It might well turn up very valuable information. With so many people this is an elaborate and complex cover story to arrange and I think it reasonable to believe that at least some of those who went to Bolivia might have themselves believed it, if only to make the cover all the more solid. This is the obvious and big lie in the whole sordid affair, that is readily identifiable as a lie. I'd like to know who the primal liar in this scenario is and I'd like to see all the material in print, if any, concocted to promote it.

I'd read Jim Farrell's profile before and agree that he needs to be looked at in detail. I'd not be as doubtful as yourself about the CIA's alleged connection to this. This is classic smoke and mirrors stuff - right up their street. Indeed the CIA have big connections with Blackwater, the biggest merc outfit in Iraq and it strikes me as unbelievable that they'd not have similar input into other merc outfits operating in Iraq and everywhere else. Tis the way of the future afterall; fight your wars with private armies - gives you the same plausible deniability you have with your intelligence operations. As an added benefit, it's much harder to be accused of war crimes when your soldiers cannot be said to be following your orders. That said, I don't see any CIA connection as being top of the priorities list at this stage. Such connections will emerge or won't emerge after IRMS are opened up for an examination.

Seán E. Ryan there is no evidence that 18 travelled to Bolivia. The only definite number is 10. 18 as far as I recall is Revesz's maximum/prefered class size. There appears to have been a class in December at a farmhouse of 1 weeks duration but I think that also included some Bolivians.
Remember that at least 6 of the ten worked in security in Ireland- probably for IRMS. 2 left in March, one of whom is definitely in Hungary.

It is a possibility that those who returned did so because they were not immediately needed and were just there to be introduced to the situation, given the lie of the land and so forth, to be recalled when necessary.
