La Prensa have it arseways on Dwyer. Probably taken out of context in the heat of the battle. You know what they say, truth is the first casualty of war.
What Prensa is correct about is the Hungarians and Croats involvement in the Croatian Liberation Movement who did indeed fight against the communist Yugoslav Peoples Army in 1991. I remember reading a book about that group and they were made up of extreme right wing nutjobs and foreign mercenaries (neo Nazis, soldiers of fortune, ex Portuguese returnado Angolan soldiers). I read somewhere that an Irishman did fight in Croatia (nickname was Cascarino) and while in Serbia a last year I was told that an ex IRA operative had trained Kraijina Serb militias under the command of a Captain Dragan.
Now here's an interesting theory about Morales. Since coing to power in 2005, Morales has been a strong supporter of Serbia, refusing to recognise the UDI of Kosovo and also this week, it was confirmed in the Serbian media that Bolivia is assisting Serbia in the International Court of Justice by way of documents and legal representation along with Venezuela in its case against Kosovo into ruling that Kosovo's UDI was illegal. I know its a bit far fetched but you could see where the right wing Croats and Hungarians would have an additional gripe against Morales.
That said, friends of Dwyer need to ask some very pertinent questions about a) what was he doing in Bolivia? and b) what was he doing in the company of these unsavoury individuals?
I have no reason to answer your questions about my friend, you are not a journalist, authority or anyone that even knows him.
I just want to hold his good name in the face of some sladdering aholes on here
I dunno that it's fair to expect that from the man's friends. They probably don't know exactly what he was up to, and are in the normal human state of shock and grief at the loss of a friend.
You're right that the question needs to be asked, though. He seems like a guy who may have kept unfortunate company. I don't get the whole gun thing, but people have odd hobbies, and put daft things on their bebo pages. I don't think most teenagers and twenty-somethings in the country could survive being judged on what they have there.
These guys saw themselves as soldiers, you take those risks, you have to be prepared to die. That goes for anyone, be they British Army or IRA or whatever.
Personally I'd rather a few neo-Nazi scumbags got killed than the democratically elected leader of the Bolivian people. No one forced them to go to a foreign country and attempt to kill their elected leadership. I don't like FF but it doesn't mean I'll try to kill their leadership.
Some of you right wing wing nuts seem to have a very fleeting commitment to democracy.
