    Charles Kennedy

The erstwhile leader of the UK Liberal Democrats (a most affable fellow) was drummed out of that party's leadership for being a drunkard. I remember at the time the poor fellow being hauled on national television before Jeremy Paxman and the blunt accusation being put to him that he was an alcoholic. As I recall, Kennedy denied this at the time of the interview but a few days later (presumably after advice from his spin doctors) made a statement to the press in which he stated that he was in fact a recovering alcoholic and was receiving professional treatment for his condition. Still didn't save his job.

This post is apropos of nothing.

Could do the LD's a power of good to get him back. They have languished since he was ousted.

There is no point: it's pintless.

So leave a populist (and popular) drunkard as leader until he gets into power - and then let him do some really serious damage. I think the LDs behaved in a selfless fashion in deposing Kennedy and put country before party.

Whats the point of bringing up a leader of a political party who drinks too much. We have much more pressing matters to discuss like the running of the country by a man who likes an odd pint but definitely doesn't have a drink problem.

And nor do any members of his cabinet - even those no longer members of a political party.
Mr Gormley described calls for the resignation of his cabinet colleague as "absolute nonsense". He said Mr Lenihan was doing "a very good job under exceptionally difficult circumstances".

I think Charles Kennedy said at the time that for a long time he was in denial - as were members of his family and close political associates.

Lads please take to your own sites for speculation about drink problems and other matters.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.
