    I am an "Islamic Extremist"

According to the criteria outlined in a new "strategy" being considered by the British government, I would be branded an "Islamic Extremist", if I were a British subject.

According to a draft of the strategy, Contest 2 as it is known in Whitehall, people would be considered as extremists if:

    • They advocate a caliphate, a pan-Islamic state encompassing many countries.

    • They promote Sharia law.

    • They believe in jihad, or armed resistance, anywhere in the world. This would include armed resistance by Palestinians against the Israeli military.

    • They argue that Islam bans homosexuality and that it is a sin against Allah.

    • They fail to condemn the killing of British soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Now, I believe that some people (including the Palestinians) have a right to engage in armed resistance.

I might also fail to condemn the killing of British soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan.

Those criteria seem a bit ridiculous to me.

I would say that extremists (of any kind, muslim or not) should be identified on the following criteria:

    - Incitement to hatred
    - Threats of violence
    - and actual violence

To be honest, the thought of a European caliphate scares the sh*t out of me, but then again the idea of a workers' international (which I kinda fancy) would probably scare the kind of people that drafted this strategy. Supporting one or the other shouldn't be grounds for being branded an extremist. We have to keep faith with our democracy (such as it is) and not resort to the kind of thought policing that this strategy seems to advocate.

I am also an 'Islamic Extremist', it seems.
Despite being neither Islamic or extremist.
British thought policing at its finest.

I'll take it that you have to agree with all of the points above to be branded an extremist at the top end of the scale.

I'm neither anti-gay or a muslim, but the above is clearly true. Islam, and Christianity and most religions do ban homosexuality.

I guess I, along with the Pope, are Islamic Extremists.

If your point is that the views mentioned are not extremist but in fact mainstream Islamic positions then you confirm that extent of the challenge facing secular democracy.
