U.S. Nuclear Weapons Withdrawn From Britain

The withdrawal from Lakenheath means that the U.S. nuclear weapons deployment overseas is down to only two U.S. Air Force bases (Aviano AB in Italy and Incirlik in Turkey) plus four other national European bases in Belgium, Germany, Holland and Italy, for a total of six bases in Europe. It is estimated that there are 150-240 B61 nuclear bombs left in Europe, two-thirds of which are based on NATO’s southern flank.

Don't think this is good news, and I wonder why they have done it

MADD and rapid nuclear response works against large nation states

The only 2 "hostile" states with even a snowballs chance of delivering a devastating first strike against the USA (or any other country) are Russia & China. Neither are likely to now as world temperature has cooled a lot.

Yes some rogue states (North Korea, Israel, Iran, Afpakistan) may pose somewhat of a threat - but not an overwhelming or immediate one. I.e. if those guys bombed somewhere the US would still have weeks to be able to respond in overwhelming force - and in any case their B52s etc could respond fairly quickly.

In summary: no need for a nuclear hair-trigger any more.

Given increased terrorism - and associated cost of securing nuclear sites - this is probably a smart move to conserve money & forces for more important battles.
