Drug violence spins Mexico toward 'civil war'

    wow.

A shootout in a border city that leaves five alleged drug traffickers sprawled dead on the street and seven police wounded. A police chief and his bodyguards gunned down outside his house in another border city. Four bridges into the United States shut down by protesters who want the military out of their towns and who officials say are backed by narcotraffickers.
Mexican police carry a body after a clash with gangs that left 21 dead in the state of Chihuahua on February 10.

Mexican police carry a body after a clash with gangs that left 21 dead in the state of Chihuahua on February 10.

    That was Mexico on Tuesday.

What is most remarkable is that it was not much different from Monday or Sunday or any day in the past few years.

Mexico, a country with a nearly 2,000-mile border with the United States, is undergoing a horrifying wave of violence that some are likening to a civil war. Drug traffickers battle fiercely with each other and Mexican authorities. The homicide rate reached a record level in 2008 and indications are that the carnage could be exceeded this year.

Every day, newspapers and the airwaves are filled with stories and images of beheadings and other gruesome killings. Wednesday's front page on Mexico City's La Prensa carried a large banner headline that simply said "Hysteria!" The entire page was devoted to photos of bloody bodies and grim-faced soldiers. One photo shows a man with two young children walking across a street with an army vehicle in the background, with a soldier standing at a turret machine gun.

Larry Birns, director of the Washington-based Council on Hemispheric Affairs, calls it "a sickening vertigo into chaos and plunder."

By most accounts, that's not hyperbole.

I was there beginning of last year and this was well underway. When i first visited the border towns in 2003 there were some inter-gang killings but the streets were calm. Last year I saw masked federales (federal police protecting their identities) with machine guns patrolling up and down the main streets and at the border fully expecting a shoot-out. The change of government in between and a more hostile policy towards drug gangs have been blamed for escalating violence.

Mexican people's resilience is impressive though - I ate lunch in a particular restaurant regularly and was told one day it had been raided by a heavily armed gang the previous night making their way through 4 restaurants in the area. It was back up and running the next day as if nothing had happened.

It's not civil war but in some places perhaps it's worse in the sense that sides are unclear, corruption is rampant and violence is frequent and explosive.

It is pretty shocking but such violence (if not the volume but certainly the type of violence) is not new to Mexico. Shoot outs between local and federal police and military, assassinations of high ranking security officals have been happening for some time, and the ruthlessness of criminal gangs well established.

The increased violence is predictable and I should think very much expected by the government following the new security measures and crackdown since Felipe Calderon took over the presidency.
It may well get a lot worse, but in some ways it is a good thing. Tackling the drug trade in Mexico was never going to be easy and the increased violence I think shows that the measures instigated by the federal government are working.
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.
