This had been a major stumbling block for Croatian accession but this may create more problems than it solves.
Firstly Gotovina is a hero to many Croatians and seeing the General of Operation Storm dragged before the Hague will not help the opinion of 'the West'. Currently only 50% of Croatians want to join the EU and if this trial isn't handled well that figure could drop further.
Secondly the EU will have to move with greater pace now that he is in custody but the institutional capacity for extending the EU beyond 27 members simply isn't there.
