Dot has posted a set of links to news reports as an OP but has not graced us with her own opinions or analysis of any of the matters linked. She has time though to complain about other peoples' posts.

The people shot were investigating the Russia far right. I can point to definite links between the Russian far right and the US State Department (and have posted on this previously): would that be off-topic too ?

Its hard to fathom what is going on in Russia at the moment. I doubt the Russian authorities have any interest in catching the killers of journalists or human rights workers. There is usually some political motivation behind arrests or the timing of them when they come. I am not sure the Kremlin is directly responsible for these killings, but they certainly foster an environment where dissidents can be killed with impunity.

Russia is a sick and twisted society, and is a much bigger danger to world peace than the Arabs, Israelis, terrorists, Iranians, or North Koreans. Human Rights count for little there. I hope Obama is fully up to the challenge, I'll side with American values over Russian ones any day...

I have to partially agree with you Toxic - if anyone seriously thinks a society that has seen such radical change as Russian without any sort of mass psychological fallout, they are deluded themselves.

From the barbaric and ruthless Tzars to the barbaric and ruthless Bolsheviks to the barbaric and ruthless oligarchs and the rise of a dangerous individual like Putin, Russia is still a huge threat to the world, not least because of the arrogance of many of its people who seem to think that they are still a superpower in the traditional sense.

Russia is a corrupt and backward country, always has been. Ireland might be corrupt and backward in many ways but we dont have nuclear weapons nor do we gas our own people or butcher civilians by the thousands and millions - and the Russian people vote for Putin and his puppet Medvedev in their droves for reasons as stupid as Irish people vote for Bev and Jackie.
