Military Report: Mexico, Pakistan at Risk of 'Rapid and Sudden Collapse'

To those of you who rubbished my suggestion a few months back that Pakistan may well collapse... it seems the US military feels the same way.

Mexico and Pakistan are at risk of a "rapid and sudden collapse," according to a recent report from the U.S. Joint Forces Command.

The assessment comes as President-elect Barack Obama prepares to tackle international challenges including the conflict in Gaza, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and tensions between India and Pakistan.

"In terms of worst-case scenarios for the Joint Force and indeed the world, two large and important states bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse: Pakistan and Mexico," the report says.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Joint Forces Command said the latest assessment was likely written before the Mumbai attacks which further inflamed tensions in South Asia.

The Joint Operating Environment report, meant to examine worldwide security trends, says Pakistan, in the event of such a rapid collapse, would be susceptible to a "violent and bloody civil and sectarian war" made more dangerous by concerns over the country's nuclear arsenal.

The report says that "perfect storm of uncertainty" by itself might require U.S. engagement.

Supposedly 5,000 people (if I remember correctly) have been killed in drug related conflicts there in the past year.

In 2007, violence related to the drug trade resulted in more than 2,000 murders in Mexico, and in 2008, the toll was more than 5,000. Only a few months ago, top-level officials in the Public Security Ministry were arrested and charged with protecting members of Mexico's main drug cartels.

    Mexico worried US might invade!

The world's superpower and the most powerful military machine humanity has ever seen plans on launching a full-scale military invasion and occupation of it's southern violent neighbor if it collapses in its bloody drug cartel war.

Never happen. There'd be a full blown mutiny. Far too many latinos in the US Army. Also other South American nations would join the affray against the Yankee. I'd probably grab my tin hat and go myself.

Well... when I searched in Google News, Fox was the first of a long list of news sources carrying the same story, so I posted it.

I personally don't think Mexico is in danger of collapse, I suspect this scare mongering is intended to act as justification for the further militarization of the US and the further erosion of civil liberties.
