Nick Davies, writer for the Guardian, has been named Journalist of the Year, Reporter of the Year and Feature Writer of the Year in the British press awards. In 2008, he wrote an expose of the "falsehood, distortion and propaganda in the global media." One chapter, The Propaganda Puzzle, focuses on the incredible amount of lies and propaganda disseminated into the media by the intelligence agencies, particularly the CIA. He cites the results of a congressional investigation chaired by Senator Frank Church and Congressman Otis Pike into the CIA together with the research by two reporters, Carl Bernstein and John Crewdson, in what became "two defining works of investigative reporting". He writes that it was discovered that

...the CIA was able to pump disinformation into the media through more than eight hundred different 'assets', scattered through every nation on earth, all of them disguised. More than four hundred of these assets were human: CIA officers posing as reporters; owners, editors and reporters who had signed secret agreements with the agency; freelance stringers who were on its payroll; staff and stringers who were available from time to time if the agency needed them. The list of human assets does not include cooperative reporters who, from time to time, were given briefings by the agency. Beyond this, the CIA used phoney front companies and foundations to take a controlling stake in a global network of newspapers, magazines, radio stations and news agencies. Some were existing outlets in which they made disguised statements; others were their own creation. 'We had at least one newspaper in every foreign capital at any given time', according to one former CIA man talking to the New York Times.

First, American business interests abroad are threatened by a popular or democratically elected leader. The people support their leader because he intends to conduct land reform, strengthen unions, redistribute wealth, nationalize foreign-owned industry, and regulate business to protect workers, consumers and the environment. It uses every trick in the book: propaganda, stuffed ballot boxes, purchased elections, extortion, blackmail, sexual intrigue, false stories about opponents in the local media, infiltration and disruption of opposing political parties, kidnapping, beating, torture, intimidation, economic sabotage, death squads and even assassination. The victims are said to be "communists" [or these days "terrorists"] but almost always they are just peasants, liberals, moderates, labor union leaders, political opponents and advocates of free speech and democracy. The last decade... rendition flights and torturing suspects to death.

...Hardly any Americans, however, are aware that not only do U.S. operatives occasionally torture "terrorist suspects" but that in many cases they torture them to death. The failure of the U.S. media to make any mention of this is the subject of an article by Peter Phillips, [COLOR=#0066cc]Hard Evidence of US Torturing Prisoners to Death Ignored by Corporate Media[/COLOR].

Phillips refers to [COLOR=#0066cc]a report by the ACLU[/COLOR] which quotes forty-four US military autopsy reports. Phillips asks: "How can the American public understand the gravity of the torture that is currently being committed in our name when the issue is being reported with no reference to the extent to which these crimes against humanity have gone?"

As a contribution to informing the American public as to what torture really means, we reproduce here a few of the autopsy reports. Remember that these deaths resulting from torture were produced by U.S. operatives, acting under the orders of commanding officers, who were implementing a policy which has its origins at the highest levels within the U.S. Department of Defense. These autopsy reports are not for people just brought in dead from the street — they are for people who died while in U.S. custody.

Fractured ribs and bones, lacerations and blunt force injuries inflicted before this victim was eventually strangled to death (while in US custody):

Autopsy revealed bone fracture, rib fractures, contusions in mid abdomen, back and buttocks extending to the left flank, abrasions, lateral buttocks. Contusions, back of legs and knees; abrasions on knees, left fingers and encircling to left wrist. Lacerations and superficial cuts, right 4th and 5th fingers. Also, blunt force injuries, predominantly recent contusions (bruises) on the torso and lower extremities. Abrasions on left wrist are consistent with use of restraints. No evidence of defense injuries or natural disease. Manner of death is homicide.[/SIZE][/FONT]

Examination of the neck structures revealed hemorrhage into the strap muscles and fractures of the thyroid cartilage and hyoid bone. History of asphyxia, secondary to occlusion of the oral airway. Pleural and pulmonary adhesions. Hypertensive cardiovascular disease. According to report provided by the US army CID, the detainee was shackled to the top of a doorframe with a gag in his mouth at the time he lost consciousness and became pulseless. The severe blunt force injuries, the hanging position, and the obstruction of the oral cavity with a gag contributed to this individual's death. [/SIZE][/FONT]

The Pentagon is assigning more special forces personnel to Yemen as part of a broad push to speed the training of the country's counterterror forces in the wake of the failed Christmas Day attack on a crowded U.S. airliner.

Military officials familiar with the matter said the U.S. will begin rotating the same groups of special forces personnel through Yemen and keeping some of the elite troops there for longer tours, changes designed to help the American trainers develop closer relationships with their Yemeni counterparts.
