7 Russian Soldiers Killed in Georgia

The BBC is reporting that 7 Russian soldiers have been killed by an explosion in South Ossetia.

The explosion happened when a vehicle which had been confiscated from an "ethnic Georgian village" exploded back at a Russian military base.

The South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity is quoted as saying that the blast was a "deliberate terrorist act prepared by the Georgian Security Ministry."

The Georgian Interior Minister responded to the claims by dismissing them and claiming that the move was a "provocation" which is intended to keep the Russians in Georgia.

It will be interesting to see how Russia reacts to this militarily, as well as whether they lay the blame for the blast on ethnic Georgian militants or the Georgian security forces. As the Georgian Interior Minister suggested, this could give the Russians the excuse they've been looking for to maintain their positions in both south Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as the "buffer zones" which have been erected around both regions. This could make some very interesting viewing yet.

Coming from a regime which probably orchestrated the 1999 Moscow apartment block bombings to provide a pretext to invade Chechnya, this shouldn't be too surprising.

One has almost come to expect such behaviour from Putin's little cast of puppets. Practically every official statement which the Russians release should taken with a large dose of salt, no matter what the topic at hand.

Anyway, I must admit that I find it a little strange that all of a sudden there is a car-bomb in South Ossetia when there has been very little (if any) armed resistance from "ethnic Georgian" minorities in the region up to this point. Just seems quite strange and unexpected IMHO.

To be honest, if the Russians DIDN'T try that old chestnut, I would be shocked.

I think it is done by Tbilisian puppets of regime which probably orchestrated the 9/11 NY WTC destructions to provide a pretext to invade Iraq and Afghanistan

Nice to see that individuals here are aware of the lengths governments will go to demonise a cause.

7 Russian Soldiers Killed in Georgia.

Interesting how you guys focused only on getting the boot into Russia. The fact that 7 people died seems to have passed right by you.

    Why am I not suprised?

The car bombing may have been the work of Chechen-Ingush terrorists with Al Qaeda links. It's possible that the Saakashvili regime has forged an alliance with these terrorists in the wake of it's defeat by the Russians. In the past the Georgians have allowed terrorists such as Midhat Mursi to operate in the Pankisi gorge area in preparation for attacks in Chechnya. It would be highly ironic if the John McCain-backed Georgian regime were found to be colluding with Islamic terrorists.

Bomb goes off in Russian army base, civvy car involved and top commander on the ground dies and a few others are killed.... thats a bit of a mouth full.

It might be more managable and indeed accurate to say:

    Blackmarket arms dealing.

Russias claims in this matter are up to their usual farcical level. A car full of unspecified arms is found in a cleansed village in South Ossetia which is under air-tight Russian control and driven to an army base where a top commander comes out to have a look see..... and boom. Sure.

Georgia did not back Chechnya nor did it allow the Pankisi Gorge to be used. The reality is they had little choice as the region was an is ethnic Chechen and Georgia itself was ill equipped to check the transit of Islamists during the conflict. Since 2002 the Georgians shut down Islamists in the Pankisi Gorge and the area is reportidly under government control - which is was not prior to 2002.
