Afghan President pardons men convicted of bayonet gang rape

Now, isn't it great that the West has intervened in Afghanistan and brought peace, prosperity & democracy to the country? Oh... wait a minute..

The Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, has pardoned three men who had been found guilty of gang raping a woman in the northern province of Samangan.

The woman, Sara, and her family found out about the pardon only when they saw the rapists back in their village.

“Everyone was shocked,” said Sara’s husband, Dilawar, who like many Afghans uses only one name. “These were men who had been sentenced and found guilty by the Supreme Court, walking around freely.”

Sara’s case highlights concerns about the close relationship between the Afghan president and men accused of war crimes and human rights abuses.

The men were freed discreetly but the rape itself was public and brutal. It took place in September 2005, in the run up to Afghanistan’s first democratic parliamentary elections.

    -----------------------------------

“The commanders, the war criminals, still have armed groups,” he said. “They’re in the government. Karzai, the Americans, the British sit down with them. They have impunity. They’ve become very courageous and can do whatever crimes they like.”

Another interesting story about the regime:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A team of journalists working for The Daily Mail newspaper investigating the drug trade in Afghanistan have made a startling disclosure that Mr. Izzatullah Wasifi, a brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, was arrested by the U.S. authorities from Caesars Palace, California, along with his wife Fereshteh Behbahani on July 15, 1987, for the trafficking of high quality heroin. Wasifi was sentenced for three years and eight months while his wife was sentenced to three years probation. However after the formation of Karzai government in Kabul, Izzatullah Wasifi was made the Governor of Farah province of Afghanistan and later, last year, his brother, Hamid Karzai, appointed him as the all powerful Chief of Afghanistan's General Independent Administration of Anti-Corruption with responsibilities to prevent the Opium growth and Heroin production and its illicit export. Keeping in view Mr. Wasifi's past, it is nothing less than stunning to notice that the person who a few years ago was a drug trafficker is today Afghanistan's chief anti-drug trafficking officer.

Maybe they were happier under the Taliban? Or the Soviet backed Communists? The country is a kip and always has been but given the choice, I'd say most of them are actually happier.

How about the 90 women and children who were killed by the Yanks last week... oh, that's right, nobody ever asked them if they were happier.

That's in your expert opinion? I knew your type would justify gang rape of women on the basis that in your opinion "most of them are actually happier". It was instances like these that people like you were using as propaganda for the continued occupation of Afghanistan now you are defending gang rapes. I'd really like to be in the minds of one of you people just for a day to see all the contradictions and hypocracy and if you are conscious of these things.

How am I defending gang rapes you muppet. You were probably down at Patricks Cathedral protesting in favour of the rapists who were demanding political asylum no doubt.

So you think the Afghans prefer the Taliban.

A belief system based entirely on speculation and presumption. What a simple life you must lead.

Jesus Christ they prefered the Soviets to the Taliban! Being the lesser of two evils doesn't make the US liberators. The Afghan people should be left alone.

Remind me of where the Taliban got their weapons and training from in the first place?
