I have to say I loved it there. It looks amazing. Granted you need to have a bank balance longer than your mobile number to be able to live there but the place is genuinely stunning. Even had dinner in the Burj al Arab - will never do it again - but incredible.
Those who think they know it all upset those of us that do.........

Well, oil will run out one day...what will they replace that economy with? Good forward thinking I'd suggest.Originally Posted by politicsisrotten

Half those buildings are empty - where are they going to get the people from?

Of course if oil is $250 a barrel and tickets there are €1400 per person then it may struggle.
That's a great link, thanks for posting it.
Dubai is simply far and away the most exciting location for 21st Century architecture. Some of what has been built is simply mediocre, but the sheer number of astounding projects being carried out there and in its sister emirates probably outstrip the rest of the world put together. Living as we do on probably the second most boring continent for modern architecture, we can only watch in awe as they expand the horizons of innovative engineering.
My only concern is environmental sustainability.

They plan to replace oil revenue with tourism when it runs out as they manufacture nothing and develop nothing, forgetting that a shortage of oil means that wealthy europeans and North Americans will be unwilling/unable to travel thousands of miles in such circumstances.Originally Posted by Oppenheimer

I'm sure the rulers of these glittering little city-states are being well advised. And Dubai receives all of 10% of its revenue from oil and gas, I believe.
