Good old Olmert!

Israel really is run by a bunch of crooks.

Israel's prime minister scammed his country's revered Holocaust memorial, a charity for disabled children and other groups out of $100,000 in a brazen double-billing scheme, investigators said yesterday.

They said Ehud Olmert personally ran the fraud and used the money to finance lavish family trips abroad.

He has to resign. At this point by not resigning he is endangering lives. Due to the allegations he doesn’t have a long term future as Israeli PM and for that reason the peace talks are never going to work. Fatah, Hamas and Syria are never going to be willing to make peace with a man who could be gone in a month because of something that has nothing to do with the peace talks. He is far too weak as well because of them.

And that’s leaving aside the fact that corruption is unacceptable and all that.

I wonder how much money the Palestinians have stolen that was meant for women and childre nand health care and schools etc.

At least Israeli leaders are held to account when they do something wrong.

Also we're hardly in any position to feel smug about the cronyism of any other country. Glass houses - pot kettle etc ...

Are you seriously suggesting they want to make peace? You can't possibly believe that Olmert is the issue - no matter who is Israeli PM Fatah, Hamas, Syria, Iran, Hex etc do not want to make peace - why would they want to make peace with a country they want to wipe out?

We saw that last night in Lebabnon.

You always have to have hope and try EOD. Jordan and Egypt make peace with Israel and in the case of Egypt no one thought that was possible. Keep in mind right from 1948 to 1978 Egypt was Israel's greatest enemy and they loved banging the Israel drum.

Olmert isn’t the issue right now, but he could become an obstacle and talks would be a lot more promising, if Israel had a strong, popular PM, who didn’t have serious corruption allegations surrounding him.

The topic opener was that Israel is run by crooks was it not? Israel is not Ireland and is not run by crooks. A few politicians have questiosn to answer is not the same as Israel being a banana republic like we are?

I don't know what he did - I haven't heard if it was proven or just a smear campaign? Given that the Israeli President was removed I'm sure the Israeli legal system is far better able to deal with Olmert if he is guilty than our system was ever going to be.

It goes without saying that if he is guilty he faces charges and is dealt with accordingly. Corruption in Israel or Ireland or Palestine is never ever excusable.

Having heard Earl's defence of Olmert's thieving of holocaust victims and children, I now look forward to seeing L'Chaim and Yanshuf similarly defending the indefensible.
