Cameron Offers Promise of Lisbon Referendum

UK Leader of the Opposition David Cameron promised a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, in the event of it not being ratified by all other countries when the Tories return to power.

Now given that Brown is going to hold on until the last day he can, that is unlikely to be before 2010.

So I am pretty sure this is just a bit of posturing by Cameron.

I can't see any advantage for him in reopening his own parties scars on Europe.

However it will have the advantage of annoying that prat Sarkozy!

I think those scars are gone - there isn't a pro-eu faction in the tories anymore.

But haven't the UK ratified it already?
Is there a procedure whereby a country can de-ratify the treaty if it has not yet come into force?
If there is a future, it will be Green.

No. But countries have pulled out of treaties in the past. The US pulled out of some longstanding nuclear treaties when Bush arrived.

The treaty won't come into force until it has been ratified by each member. Therefore they can just change their mind as opposed to pull out.

Good news. Seabhcan is correct. The pro-integration wing of the Tories died years ago. Even former Chancellor Ken Clarke no longer supports joining the euro.

Clarke was one of the only three Tory Mp's to vote to prevent a UK popular vote on Lisbon. He has very little credibility left within his party on this one.
The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

Never heard you say that before. It seems there is a point of intersection between the real world and the FT universe.

Re: Cameron Offers Promise of Lisbon Referendum

Anyone who believes that Cameron will hold a referendum on anything pertaining to Britain's membership of the EU or any related future treaties is naive in the extreme, once in government like all political parties the Conservatives will renege on such promises claiming that it's not a constitutional requirement and that circumstances have changed since that commitment was made.
    Average expenses per TD in 2011:- FG €36,412, Lab €28,756, FF €45,219, SF €44,413, SP €23,654, PBP €31,866, WUAG €49,911, IND €37,805, CC €13,112.

Lots of spin with little substance.
