Is it time to scrap the UN?

Russia and China have veoted a UN proposal on Zimbabwe. On another thread I expressed wholehearted support for the US putting its missile defence shield into the the Czech Republic. The usual suspects crawled out of the wood work to engage in US bashing while giving the unelected thugs in Moscow and Beijing a free pass. These same thugs have no shwon that they have no respect for any human rights or rule of law and will vetoe any action against any dictator. It is not surprising that the US didn't bother going to the UN o Iraq.

Senator McCain has suggested having some alliance of free nations. It would probably be the G7, EU, Oz and NZ, South Korea and some South AMerican countires. This vote has shown the UN to be a farce and Senator McCains idea should be givwen serious consideration.

I agree with you, the UN as it stands is nothing more than a joke. And what annoys me is the way our government has us tied to it with this ridiculous triple lock. I would be all for McCain’s proposal.

The triple lock is a joke. There to appease the sandal wearing lentil munching tree huggers. If it was up to them we's be scrapping our army and navy. Try living in the Middle East or Eastern Europe and you'll see the value of a military alliance like NATO which by the way we should join.

I also would be all for joining NATO. But I don’t think they would want us, you see our army does not fight wars; it just does “peacekeeping”. Wars are fought on our behalf by other countries.

The UN is fine but the permanent members of the security council need to be stripped of their veto or they wil continue to render the UN's good work meaningless. Russia, France, China, the UK and the US need to stop supplying arms to every despot on the planet and vetoing any positive corrective measure taken against their activities.

Scrap the UN - but not for Security Council reasons or the potential force of its army which has not yet been realised. It should be scrapped because of the bureaucratic mountain it places on sovereign Nation States regarding social policy.

Following the UN up with another coercive internationalist body like you described would hardly be progress.
Marxists, Feminists and Leftists operate on the basis of "liberating tolerance" - i.e. their ideas should be tolerated, and any opposition should be suppressed.

The UN is silly and utterly ineffective, and its only purposes is to allow people to be able to pretend that international relations is about something more than self-interest.
The political establishment lacks both vision and courage.

That the UN continues to give power to those who did something in a war over 60 years ago speaks volumes. The world has moved on since then and if we still wish to operate with this farcical veto situation the UN should at least represent the power dynamics of the modern world. Of course, the veto has been consistently abused by all five states who hold it but you can't blame them for acting in their own interest when they have been given the tool to do so with and the legitimacy to continue to do so.

A league of democracies? That would just turn into a US puppet club, reducing the rest of us to satellite states, not to mention the UNs role was to promote peaceful settlement of disputes, since almost all (except US led) wars come from and are between non-democracies, not having them in the room to talk to would kinda defeat the whole point....

The UN security council is the only organ of the UN that is a serious problem, and the whole thing should be scrapped, it's not possible to reform it while those vetos exist, the notion behind it's existence was insane to begin with, and they never would give up the vetos in any case.
