    Re: Johnson elected Mayor

I thought that both Johnson and Livingstone's speeches were generous in tone, and that was welcome. Each was understandably tired (and a bit emotional) but we can forgive them that, surely, at the end of such a frenetic campaign.

I have always liked Ken Livingstone but I do feel that Boris must be given a chance to prove his worth in the new role. Just because he has cultivated an odd public persona - one that has caused me to be concerned at his character and competence in public service - this doesnt mean that he shouldnt be given the opportunity to redeem himself. Londoners seem to think so. Perhaps he will surprise us with a competence that we wouldnt previously have associated him, as Ken did with many on the right who thought he would destroy the city. Time will tell, but I wish Boris well....

While it is sad that Ken lost to the tory clown, Labour should be somewhat heartened that they got over one million votes and also increased their representation on the GLA. This is a bad day for multicultural London. Ken has been a good friend to the Irish community in London and never failed to turn up to events when requested. I cant see the clown doing the same. The Tories are the cream of Britain thick rich and full of clots.

Of course he does not travel by bus, thats a stunt for tv, last year his taxi bill was 40k as the standard revealed.

He even took a taxi to London from Liverpool instead of the train, new labour have been found out.
A bit like when blood samples have to be sent from one hospital to another here, it goes by taxi. Why? That's always been the way. FF too chicken to take on the public sector unions. Almost all union members will, I predict, be public sector by 2012. Why? A chicken government afraid to take them on. And that cowardice costs us all!!!!!

I was initially concerned about the Olympics but then i remembered Boris' fine sporting pedigree

    (never gets old)

Dammit mods, neither embed method works. Anywho:

We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

While the number of B.N.P still number in small quantaties of Local councillors etc

it is certainly a considerable ammount of growth in the last seven years.

While not expecting any explosion in the politcal coal face of British politics

it does seem to be a slant deserving of some study.

It’s a sad day that such a friend of the Irish community in London has been defeated. He defended the Irish when it was politically dangerous to do so. Boris is a buffoon.

When you've got the only London evening paper waging an unrelenting campaign against your guy (Livingstone) by an ex-employee of the other front runner, it was always going to be tough, although the allegations of cronyism didn't help Ken, of course.
Livingstone hasd a free newspaper called the Londoner, paid for by taxpayers, with himself in charge distributed to every household in lonodn free every month for the entirety of his time as Mayor. Johnson's first act is to close that paper down. The Eveniong Standard is not London's only evening paper, there is also the Londonpaper(owned by the Labour backer Rupert Murdoch) and the London Lite.
For people who believe Boris lacks a work ethic or is a buffoon, the man speaks(among other languages) latin and greek, to learn those requires enormous ability and concentration.
His first policy announcement is to close down the propaganda sheet as outlined above and use the money to pay for inspectors on busses to reduce the crime there.

Fair point on there being other papers but the Standard is the biggie.

If The Londoner doesn't tell people what's happening in their city who will - the Evening Standard? I believe local and national government should communicate with its citizens.

Learning Latin and Greek may show that Boris had some sort of work ethic at public school but I don't think they'll help him run London. That said, let's see what he actually does. His acceptance speech was promising although I still think he's very suspect in the 'totally blonde' stakes. Maybe he'll surprise us (and David Cameron).
