    Collapse of Gulf Co-operation Council

The death knell for the GCC (never a very effective organization) was sounded yesterday when Saudi Arabia and the UAE failed to send top-level participants to the GCC meeting in Kuwait and, at around the same time, announced that they would form a new partnership to co-ordinate “all military, political, economic, trade and cultural fields,” the basic goal of the GCC.

The Qatar crisis is of course part of the problem, but this will also be interpreted as a deliberate snub to the Emir of Kuwait. The GCC is now split in two with Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain in one camp and Qatar, Kuwait and Oman in the other.

Sounds like another round in Saudi Arabia's power play to dominate the Middle East.
