Its a stupid publicity stunt. I cannot see the US congress recognising yet another religous holiday, which is what St. Patricks day is, even if that point has been lost on many to p*ssed to care on the day.

I see where the Americans are coming from on this. We wouldn't like it if every nationality here demanded their national day became a holiday here.

It's under the Northern Ireland section, which as I'm sure you are aware, is in the UK.

Fully aware, I was merely asking why the story as a whole was in that section, both the UK and Northern Ireland section?

Why would anyone in AMerica adopt St. patrick's Day as a holiday? The Irish in Ireland have already abandoned it, it seems to be now just a holiday for the immigrants and a chance for them to dance around.

The crucial unifying factor for the nation that American public holidays play is based to a large extent in their universality, in their not catering to specific ethnicities. Interestingly, the public holidays only apply to federal employees; the rest of the nation just generally plays along.
