All the Arab papers, are carrying a released letter from the imprisoned President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein. It was released by the International Red Cross, who have verified it's authenticity.
The letter has had the opposite effect of what the Americans had in store for Saddam. They had hoped to see a dishrevelled, broken man in the dock pleading for clemency, as he was tried by an Iraqi Judge. His court appearances, (which are now shown without audio), his bravado and his defiance in facing death, is fast creating a hero out of a villain. It's almost reminiscent of the Irish attitude to the 1916 martyrs, and how it changed during the trials and execution.
In the letter Saddam shows no sign of remorse, and indeed seems proud that he is suffering along with his people. He states: "I and my family offer ourselves for this Nation, including Palestine and our steadfast, beloved and wretched Iraq" He goes on:" In life without faith, love and the inherited traditions, our Nation is destroyed"
"He who sacrifices his property, and soul for his Nation, is but doing a little because this Nation deserves much to be done."
He ends his letter with, "Long live Palestine. Love your Nation"
I personally have always believed it was Saddams support for the Palestine struggle, more than anything else that, that drove the Zionist supporters within the American Establishment. With his inevitable death penalty, Hussein will become a martyr within the Arab streets. His death will make the current culture of martyrdom in the Middle East, more dynamic. It may even be the cataclyst for Iraqi Civil War.
Another American plan fails.
