Following on from his sacking under a cloud of corruption a few months back, Jacob Zuma's house has now been raided by the South African police investigating the scandal. Despite his sacking, it would appear that Zuma is still popular amongst the ANC's membership, and in particular the influential Union bloc of the party and amongst Zulus. However, it is unclear whether the sacking of Zuma was window dressing, the killing of a scraficial lamb or an attempt to weed out the corruption that is seen by many SA commentators to be associated with the ANC, whose position as the only credible government party regionally and nationally.
This scandal and how it unfolds over the coming months is extremely important for the future of modern South Africa, and particularly its claims to lead and speak for Africa influentially. Already Mbeki has damaged his reputation internationally by refusing to critisce Mugabe's regime in any depth. This case offers Mbeki a chance to be seen to be firm on corruption and to send out a strong message that SA offers leadership in more than rehtoric.
We will see in this case, the future for SA in the short and medium term. What kind of SA will we have in ten years time? An strong and vibrant democracy asserting herself on the international stage? Or a country sliding in the abyss of history strangled by a one party state?
