Tory MP to Stand Down over Overpaying his Son

I wonder what would happen if jornalists started delving in TDs and Senators arrangements here... Id say we'd have a lot more than just one standing down!

You might find it was happening... I don't think anyone would stand down.

The British expect a certain standard of their members of parliament. We expect nothing except a ring road/local hospital. Delete where applicable.

He's standing down at the next election rather than resigning. And the reason is probably because he's had the Tory whip withdrawn and so is not eligible for reselection.

We are very high and mighty to-day aren't we.

The culture is different. If you resign in Britain you'll be back in no time. They mean nothing eg David Blunkett. Over here, you resign your gone forever. eg Jim McDaid, Sean Doherty, Ned O' Keefe.

Personally I'd prefer rare resignations that are over something worth resigning over that political tools to gain a few points in an opinion poll.

There are many cases involving Irish TDs&Senators where their wife/son/daughter holds a S.A. job or indeed a P.A. job and do nothing except collect the Oireactas salary each week.

It should be investigated, and those involved named and shamed the way it has been done in Britain. It would also make for good reading!!

I'd like it if people took responsibility for their actions instead of hiding behind a political culture that rewards cute hoorism. Did someone say "e-voting machines?"

And DR, I'd imagine even an ex-PD can expect some level of transparency from their elected representatives.

No I'd much prefer they make decisions for me behind closed doors...

Transparency transparency... what the hell is that supposed to mean?

You know about E-voting don't you? You now how much they cost and when and why they were brought in. I'd like to remind you that Brendan Howlin brought up the idea. Should he resign?

Was he the minister who implemented it in the face of mounting, serious and justified criticism?
