    The government resigns in Italy

Back to the old days of instability. Berlusconi's government actually performed a miracle of lasting the whole election-period of 2001-06. Now, Prodi has lost a vote of confidence and has tendered his resignation. There will either be a new election or Berlusconi will return as PM. The fallen coalition consisted of no fewer than 13 groups some of which don't deserve to be called parties.

The Italians changed their electoral system to some sort of mixture between FPTP and PR but the parties have circumvented this by forming very large electoral-alliances which break down after elections.

We also must not forget how the whole party-landscape of the Italian politics was changed in the 90`s when most of the then existing parties ceased their existence because of scandals. On the ruins of the old parties, Berlusconi &co have set up their new ones and in addition to those ones there are the fans of fascism and the northern separatist party.
