    Phone confusion after Bush error

US homeowners searching for help with their mortgages struggled to get through on a telephone number that President Bush gave them on Thursday.

"I have a message for every homeowner worried about rising mortgage payments: the best you can do for your family is to call 1-800-995-HOPE," he said

The number Bush gave was for the Freedom Christian Academy in Texas.

The school phone rang non-stop when Bush gave out the number.

"I've tried my best to give the correct number to these people when they called," the academy's Ms Karen Pulaski told the Dallas Morning News, having spoken to more than 50 people in an hour.

"But it got a little overwhelming because I couldn't do anything except answer these calls."

Ms Pulaski later disconnected the phone.

The correct number, White House aides later told reporters, was 1-888-995-HOPE.

hardly a hanging offence to say 1-800 instead of 1-888 seeing as they are the two most common freephone prefixes, now is it?

It was written on the teleprompter in front of him.

At least he has set up a number for people in debt trouble, in all fairness. Everybody knows he isn't the best at speeches and gets his words and numbers messed up once in a while. Get over it.

on a similar note (i.e. stupidity)...

was talking to a female colleague of mine at lunch. she was in her mid twenties, when i mentioned garret fitzgerald to her (referring to the article in saturday's Irish Times) she didn't know who i was talking about.

i mentioned that he was once taoiseach, she stared blankly at me. one of two of the older ones started smiling.

i asked her what jordan's real name was. needless to say she didn't even need to think about it.

ffs, i'm only 30 (and a half!) am i an old codger out of touch with "today's yoof"?

I know someone, who for obvious reasons when you hear the story shall remain nameless. This person once said '087' when '086' was clearly written on a piece of paper in front of them. How they can get up and go to work everyday and carry on like as if it never happened, after what they did to that little phone number I'll just never know.

Try all you want, I'm not going to give their name. I know how seriously you take the whole misreadificating of phone numbers, and I don't think they deserve to die just because of their one moment of complete madness.

We'll have to let the courts decide. What's the Garda Confidential number again?
