    MTV invades the Middle East!

    From the BBC:

    Here

So MTV has decided that its time to unleash its pap on the Middle East?

The service says on its website that since its launch in 1981:

MTV has "influenced how young people all over the world dress, think, and talk."

It also claims the channel has "given artists a forum for airing their political views and pushed society's boundaries."
In my opinion, MTV is utter rubbish - I havent watched it for more than ten minutes in years and I certainly think their own smug, self celebratory statements apply only to negative aspects of society such as greed, avarice, sexism, mysogeny and materialism (cribs being a perfect example of materialism).

So how do people think the middle east will react to this tripe?
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.

I havent watched mtv in 10 years. I would imagine it would be hated in the middle east for the same reason i do.

Seriously though, stop being such an oul grinch OD.

Mtv does indeed have a lot of sh1te on it these days - in fact the main station plays sod all music videos now. Mtv2 is f'n brilliant however, and I'm sure their other specialists channels are the same for fans of those specific genres.

Remember Mtv changed the entire music industry in the 80's, pretty much invented reality TV with the Real World, and brought sooo many great videos and incredible bands into our living rooms. Rockumentary's, behind the scenes, festival specials, the classic awards show performances.. all these things we take for granted were pretty much invented by Mtv

It came along when TOTP and Pan's People were still in vogue, while we in Ireland had nothing whatsoever. It has many many many drawbacks, but jaysus, we're talking about a global phenomenon here. The Middle East will lap it up like every other once conservative society has, including this one.
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

Your not on their pay roll by any chance alonso?.
MTV and its ilk destroyed music and went downhill fast in the early 90s because of all the crap hip hop, rap and 'booty' obsessions.
Music with no creativity - the artistic equivalent of giving a toddler some crayons and then putting up the picture next to a Raphael.
They have no talent - when was the last time you could discern an instrument in all the drivel. And why are the videos so mysogynistic?.
Why do we need to see the inside of rappers and footballers homes. And what is this genetic condition that affects these people - an overwhelming compulsion to buy large screen TVs?.
Just demonstrates that money doesn't buy class - once from the gutter, always from the gutter. Absolute materialistic morons. They should be lined up and shot

But you cant really say that playing music videos non stop contitutes a channel though?

Yes thats all true, but you say they invented reality TV like it was a good thing - it isnt. Its lazy, mindless and stupid, hence the huge popularity, people like stupidity (jackass springs to mind). As to all the other things, I believe most people like music because of how it affect them when they listen to it - I myself, and I am not trying to speak for anyone else here although I suspect a large number of people will agree, couldnt give a flying fig about 'rockumentaries', behind the scenes and especially brutal, self congratulatory 'award' shows. I like music - a CD player, tape deck, MP3 player, old 78, gramaphone, whatever. I know some people like pretty pictures with their music, but their usually under 18 and have neuvo mullets. I could care less how many african kids they steal, sorry adopt, from impoverished nations and certainly dont care how big their LCD is. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I am just a grumpy old man, but watching some failed 'celeb' presenter play video after video of a people singing sone that are supposed to be about love but are actually singing about casual sex (nowt wrong with a bit of casual mind), some skinny moron in tights playing the same three cords over and over again, 4 muppets in white suits doing professional (and well paid) karaoke or a man complaining about how 'his people' were treated whilst being abusive to Asians, whites, women and homosexuals is BORING.

MTV is corporate, prepackaged ************************ of the highest order and the sooner its execs are taken to a volcano and nuked a lá scientology, the better.

yeh but lads n ladies - 120 minutes, Headbanger's Ball, Alternative Nation. There were good days. I agree entirely about the hip hop invasion - the most offensive genre going. On reality tv, yes it's mostly rubbish, but they still invented a genre that persists to this day as one of the most popular. Re awards shows - in the 90's they gave us some incredible performances like Nirvana, Metallica, RHCP etc. Maybe i'm totally biased because they played so much punk, metal and grunge - the sort of stuff the Beeb and Beat Box never really touched.

I don't believe popular music is worse now than preMtv- that's lazy and simple analysis. Eg Disco was an aberation against humanity, while post Mtv Grunge was brilliant. You can't disregard all popular music because hip hop is an affront to society!

MTV has transformed Western culture in general and youth culture in particular. It's a vehicle for liberalisation of society and a phenomenon in itself. While I'm not exactly its biggest fan, I can recognise the value the station has had over the years. This is to be welcomed. Cheerier than AL-Jazeera, anyway

I dunno, I used to understand MTV. They used to play music and stuff and I recall I used to like it. But now there are about 143 different MTVs and as far as I can tell none of them play music.
But Middle Easten pop music is awful ************************e, I have the CDs to prove it, I can't see it taking off.

Lol, I think with the advent of digital television, MTV can offer more specialised channels for different types of music. And then for us plebs with basic NTL and Sky, there's the world's worst channel... MTV1. It makes CNBC look good (and why on Earth is that in the NTL package?)
