Information about all landline and mobile phone calls made in the UK must be logged and stored for a year under new laws.
Is this draconian? Could it be implemented here too?

Im pretty sure that that information is available from the phone companies anyway. The law surely just means that they have to store it for a year- which they probably do given that there will always be disputes about charges.Originally Posted by Aindriu
It already is and has been for ages and details held for longer than a year.
Its why the Glasgow bombers could be traced so easily.
Reality is that police were less than 30 minutes away from picking them up.
Could you fix the link, thanks.Originally Posted by Aindriu

The EU has laid down rules for what must be maintained - it involves where the call was made (including the cells if it is a mobile call), who made it, call duration, email addresses, subject lines etc - basically everything EXCEPT for the content. Individual member states are exceeding the minimum requirements in their own legislation - most notably the likes of Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. But as posters have already said - the phone companies are already storing data for billing purposes so it is no big deal.
But how long before they start storrng the data? You have already said that some member states are storing more than the minimum requirement. Reid in the UK would love the chance to do this.Originally Posted by Gimpanzee

When I was a kid every phone call made between Britain and Ireland was monitored by GCHQ in Cheltenham. Apparently there were trigger words. Most Irish families in Britain back then were well aware of the eavesdropping..
UK has being doing this for years and I doubt john reid would have any interest in this as he ceased being a cabinet member 3 months ago.Originally Posted by Aindriu
