Putin 2B Russia's next Prime Minister...

Yes its Official - he's just announced it himself!

Bit of a shock nevertheless as Putin outsmarts any potential rivals to his control of political life.

A one term Puppet President with Putin pulling the strings looks like the most likely scenario - will this mark the begining of a return to the old Soviet style position where the President was little more than a figurehead?

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he will run for parliament and had a realistic chance of becoming prime minister.

His statement was a shock announcement that could herald fundamental change in the way Russia is governed.

That is rather big news. We all knew that he would maintain power somehow, hadn't thought of him doing this as the way of doing it. A shrewd move on his behalf.

My guess was that he would become Chairman of Gazprom, but at the end of the day - CEO of Gazprom, or prime minister - it is pretty the same powers in Russia. The one who controls the shots at Gazprom (be it CEO or premier) is the one wielding real power in that damn country.

very astute, don't think many would have seen that particular moving coming

Because through all its history it has only grabbed neighbours' territory and lead countless wars with them, sometimes fully annexing the closest countries. Looks like a new loop of violent behaviour has started. Woe on us

Did Prince write the title to this thread?

Putin's plan is based on one of his allies becoming President, and then afterwards agreeing to make him PM. While the first half of that equation is an almost certainty, I'm not convinced that the second is. What's to stop the new pres from telling Putin to piss off?

It took cyanide, a revolver, a 'drowning' and eventually hypothermia to get rid of Rasputin - tough lads these Russians .
