New York attempts to ban expletives

An attempt is being made in New York city to ban the words "b*tch" and "ho". This is the same council which earlier this year banned the word "ni**er". If freedom of speech cannot suvive unscaved in the land of the brave and the home of the free can it survive anywhere?

Do you use these words? what is your point in battling this? free speech? would you protect neo nazis freedom of speech? obviousily people should be able to express views, but what view can be defended if it refers to women as bitc** and ho and african american people as ni**ers?? yes, the world is going down the drain now that i cant call my housemate a ho, and the black family who live beside me, ni**ers!! what am i ever going to do if that happens?

It's the subtle difference between discouraging those words use and legislating for it because today it's n*gger & b*tch that are banned, tomorrow it could be liberty & equality. Both of those words were "bad" words once.

As someone infinitely wiser than myself once said "Principles only mean something if you stand by them when it's inconveniant to do so" so yes I would defend a neo-nazi's, or a paleo-nazi's, right to free speech. Freedom of speech is the right to say what is abhorrant to 99% of the population. Once upon a time it was abhorrant to say that there is no god. Would you then think that it was socially responsible and morally justifiable to ban such talk back then? If not how can it be morally justifiable to ban such talk now?

where is there proof that three words that are never good could lead to liberty and equality being taken away from us? i dont see how you reach that conclusion, there is not enough evidence for such a conclusion, do you have examples of where this happens?

Offensive language is already against the law in many countries, like you cant tell the guards to fu** off, so does that mean our liberty and freedom are gone? in England you can be arrested for using foul language in public

    so how is this new?

but its much more complicated then that, in your own home, say what you want, in a publicc place, you should have the manners not to call a woman a bi**h or a nigerian, a ni**r. so yes i would believe it is right if these people are fined for abusing others. There is a huge difference between free speech and abusive speech

What about the gardeners? And vets?
Are they going to ask people the meaning and spelling of the words before arresting them?

Thats why their is a law against slander(I think, or at least their should be). If I were to call an African a ni**er as a term of abuse in the knowledge of what that term implied I would be inflicting damage to that persons reputation. I should then be liable to be persued by the injured party in the civil courts, not the criminal. You said one ought to have the manners to not call someone a bi*ch. But who decides what my, or anyone else's manners ought to be? What right does the state have to tell the individual what they should think? None In my opinion.

Right, before you guys go all liberty and freedom hippy loving mad. Note the following, Criminal Justice Act (public order) 1994 states

6.—(1) It shall be an offence for any person in a public place to use or engage in any threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or being reckless as to whether a breach of the peace may be occasioned.

so its been in Irish law for some time, is it really a big deal? have you not noticed it before
