    Thanks!

So first Democratic candidate, Obama threatens to open up a tin of whoop ass on the Pakis, now a Republican candidate threatens to bomb Mecca and Medina if the US is attacked.

Is the upcoming US presidential election going to be about issues such as healthcare, the balance of trade, or the environment, or is it going to hinge on which candidate promises to unleash the greatest wave of shock and awe on the rag heads?

Any predictions as to what the other nominees might promise? Kidnapping and skinning alive the children of Hamas activists perhaps?

WASHINGTON: Republican presidential hopeful Tom Tancredo says the best way he can think of to deter a nuclear terrorist attack on the U.S. is to threaten to retaliate by bombing Islamic holy sites.

The Colorado congressman on Tuesday told about 30 people at a town hall meeting in the state of Iowa that he believes such a terrorist attack could be imminent and that the U.S. needs to hurry up and think of a way to stop it.

"If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina," Tancredo said at the Family Table restaurant. "Because that's the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they otherwise might do."

Mecca and Medina, in Saudi Arabia, are Islam's holiest cities. All able-bodied Muslims are required to make a pilgrimage there at least once in their lives. Tancredo's comments were recorded and posted on the Web site iowapolitics.com.

A Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group responded in anger Thursday, calling Tancredo's statement "unworthy of anyone seeking public office in the United States."

Who? I'd be concerned if it was one of the more credible real contenders saying mad stuff. But some local gombeen politician with delusions of adequacy saying wildly stupid stuff is common to every country really. Remember the local councillor in Co Clare who was on the radio raving about packs of feral deer hiding in the forests and raping his cattle?

Hopefully the other candidates will back away from warmongering lunacy and try to get the campaign onto real issues. But US politics has been going very very wrong for over a decade now, so I'd be disappointed but not suprised if the election does turn into a load of macho posturing lunacy.

We can only hope the electorate are slightly more sane than the candidates.
