I have registered by opposition to this analysis before (see this thread: Darfur- the World's Shame). I don't wish to re-hash it. Obviously today's announcement is marvellous news, and Brown (who is really impressing me thus far- though it is still the honeymoon for him) and Sarkozy deserve much praise for driving this through.
We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the internet, we know this is not true.

I don't know why they have bothered to do anything now.

The situation in Darfur really upsets me. I just don't know what to say about it.
    A poster of some consequence...

Sudan will co-operate with UN and African Union peacekeepers in Darfur, Sudan's UN ambassador said after the UN Security Council backed a joint force.

The mandate for the 26,000-strong force was watered down to appease critics and it will only be able to protect civilians deemed to be under threat.

it is for that reason that China may be exempt from contrubiting troops to the force in Darfur. Given its growing "investment" in the area any other future UN deployments in Africa may not incude China either. Profit without risk. Beijing laughing all the way to the bank.

Indeed, I spent a month in East Africa last year. The levels of Chinese activity are becoming very worrying for many of the citizens over there. Don't feel like rehashing it all up again so you can go searching way back in my previous posts if you are really bothered

That's interesting. The levels of Chinese activity in the North Inner City of Dublin are becoming very worrying for many of the Irish citizens there too.
