Veteran Sunday Times war correspondent Marie Colvin killed by shelling in Syria

Breaking news this morning that two journalists have been killed when the building they were in was struck by Syrian army shells in Homs.

They have been named as Marie Colvin, a veteran American war correspondent currently working for the Sunday Times, and Remi Ochlik, a French photographer.

According to the Irish Times, citing Reuters:

A witness told Reuters by phone that shells hit the house where the journalists were staying and a rocket hit them as they were escaping.

And here is the report from the Daily Telegraph:

Colvin was a fearless reporter who lost an eye when she suffered a shrapnel wound while working in Sri Lanka in 2001. In public appearances after that attack, she wore a black eye patch.

    Marie Colvin

RIP to them both - brave people doing a very dangerous job that has now cost them their lives.

I still feel that it is stupid to run around a warzone and reporting, it's like asking to be killed.

In any case, condolences to the family and may they RIP, hopefully their work changed the world for the better.

RIP to this brave lady who lost her life whilst reporting to the world the mass murder being carried out the Syrian dictatorship that is being protected by Russia and China at the UN.

So the atrocities of war should go unreported?

It is an interesting conundrum, though.

It is also on the basis of news reporting and opinion writing that statesmen and the top military brass partly assess their options and decide policies. They know that media reporting of military-humanitarian interventions conditions in part their success or failure in justifying their choices and implementing them.
Journalists in other words, even if they see themselves as witnesses and observers, are “dogs in these fights”. Their decision to cover a story or not determines the attention that a crisis will be given in policy circles. Their capacity to report rigorously and thoroughly is a crucial factor in the complex set of factors conditioning the intervention.

What terrible news. What an immensely brave journalist. I just watched her last report on youtube about the death of a small child (with graphic footage). I read all her reports for several years. What a true hero. May she rest in peace.

Nah I didn't mean it like that, it's just a dangerous profession in my view, it's basically being in the army.

What a stupid comment - if it wasn't for journalists like Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik, and many thousands like them, the world would know very little about what goes on in every warzone around the world.

Before Twitter and YouTube, it was the courage and determinations of the Colvins and Ochliks of this world that brought the horrors of what is now happening in Syria and what has happened in every warzone past and present to the attention of us all.

And by your logic, any so-called 'citizen journalist' who uses their iPhone or a camcorder to record what is going on now in Syria 'is stupid' and 'is asking to be killed'.

The idiocy that appears on this site never ceases to surprise.

He means he is annoyed that Russia is being so badly shamed on the world stage by backing the murderous Syrian dictatorship and he would prefer if journalists we not in Homs reporting on these murders being carried out by regime forces.

You should look in the mirror and comprehend my post the way it was intended to be comprehended. Going out risking your ass is either stupid or brave or a combination of both. Or are you debating the fact that running around under gunfire get's people off?

I'm sure the brave and noble goal (note: no sarcasm) of reporting war crimes and the truth is very important, but that doesn't make the act of actually doing it any less intelligent on a self-surviving instinct. You don't jump out infront of cars to stop pollution? Why not? Because it's stupid.

Quote and proof, otherwise feel free to take your assumptions to another thread where you can spew your propaganda.
