Young Russians; "Syria are our allies and we won't be bullied by the West"

BBC 5Live's journalist, Aasma Mia, has just returned from a couple of days in Russia were she was interviewing mostly young Russians. To Richard Bacon's astonishment, not one of those interviewed had any problem with Russia playing it's veto regarding the UN vote on Syria.

Typically of Bacon, he asked her if there was any independent TV there and she, of course, replied that there was and cited some examples. I listened to some of the live vox pop yesterday and Libya/1973 constantly came up as well as the Iraq invasion.

She will be talking more about this matter from 4 o'clock on the channel.

Todays IT letters , coincidentally. Looks we're in " strong government needed " territory here !!

The Irish Times - Readers Letters and Feedback

Sir, – I was stunned to read of the blatantly aggressive and insulting language of rebuke in the Arab press, as well as by high-ranking US and European officials, regarding the Russian and Chinese vetoes of the proposed UN Security Council resolution on Syria (Breaking News, February 6th).

I am Russian and I support the veto because I believe the West misunderstands the situation in the Middle East – the recent events in Egypt are sufficient proof of that to me. Yet I do not fully trust Russian politics either. There are interests on both sides.

However, this tirade of abuse is very sad to read.

Are we really that full of hatred and disgust towards each other? – Yours, etc,

I confess that I do not see what good it does to fulminate against the English tyranny while the Roman tyranny occupies the palace of the soul. - James Joyce

What examples did she cite?. I have lived in Russia and visited there lots of time. Major channels free to air are.

Russia One - State owned and run
Channel One - State a majority stakeholder
Centre TV - A Moscow government run channel
NTV - Owned by state-run oil from Gazprom
RT - State funded ( not seen it in Russia itself, so I think maybe only satellite and only English speaking ).

About only channel that was not state funded or state run I seen in Russia was Ren TV.

One out of six not bad I suppose

You're not far wrong from the truth but, the people of Russia have the internet. I personally make use of both RT, Channel One, CNN and BBC. If you compare them all, they are all spreading propaganda against each other, be it subtle or direct. The giant slander against the veto of the Russian Federation - It's their right to veto the decision, that's why they are on the security council, so one state like the US cannot dominate the other ones with their sanctions and military prowess. To add to that, both Russia and China are keeping the playing field as equal as possible in the UN - We need this balance, we need Russia and China to balance out the US. The same way we need the US to balance Russia and China.

I haven't been home in a long time and the satellite reception here is poor, so I really can't personally give you an example of an independent TV, but I'l ask my relatives and see what they can tell me.

Spasiba bolshaya. Vi russkiy?. Not all Russians have 'sputnik' either, so free to air from normal aerial would be most worthwhile to know.

Sorry for only getting back now.

She mentioned a couple, including RT (the only one I recognised) but as Kommunist mentioned, she said that young Russians are keen on the internet and foreign media.

The British media, especially the BBC, has become a complete propaganda machine at the moment. They've just dragged up the protests in Russia against the last election but the fact that a over one million people took to the streets of GB in Novermber and the same amount walked the streets of London against going in to Iraq make a bolix of the reporting.

Once again, the BBC has just talked to "a man" in Homs. A man? What man? We had the same shyte prior to Libya. Unfortunately, "the man" neglected to mention that he and his muckers had their own little agenda
