The SR will have to be on his best game to blame this on 'the gah'.

missed the original thread, sorry. Looked around for one and saw nowt.
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

Will the SR be calling for a global ban on soccer?

I think one trigger for the violence is plain and simply the rivalry that exists between opposing fans.
    Sad but possibly true.

There's video footage there too. It's not clear exactly what happened from the clip, it must've been the crush that did the damage. Horrifying stuff for Egypt and horrifying for Africa which is in the middle of the Cup of Nations at the moment. Is this violence merely a reflection on the ongoing social disorder post Arab-Spring, or just a tragedy.Parallels with Heysel
will be drawn for obvious reasons.
Port Said, the home team, had unexpectedly beaten Al-Ahly 3-1 and their fans invaded the pitch to celebrate. Cue outbreak of chaos. Al-Ahly fans have a reputation for fanaticism.

Since the revolution, there's been a security vacuum at matches, apparently. There was always the possibility of trouble but the army and police could keep a lid on it.

Indeed. Heysel was hardly a manifestation of any underlying sociological or political malfunction. The game just attracts that sort of animal apparently.

Seanie this thread is about neither The_SR nor GAA. I'm presuming your "animal" comment is not meant in any offensive way and is meant quite literally. This story is tragic and not a reason for any nonsense
