    Muslim extremists prevent Salman Rushdie attending literary festival in India.

    Not only did the Deobandi sect of Islam - the sect from which the Taliban draw their inspiration- prevent Rushdie from attending India in person they extended their fatwa to the festival organisers who had hoped to do the interview by videolink.

    The reason for his visit was to speak about the making of a film from his book " Midnights Children " . In protest at this censorship authors like Tom Stoppard read passages from the novel.

    This is an interview with Rushdie today on NDTv, where he speaks out for intellectual freedom and his disdain for censorship by state, extremists or self.

    And where was the government and the authorites in India that allowed these extremist Muslim groups stop Rushdie appearing at this festival. You'd wonder who's in charge of the country

    No time for Rushdie. And IMO he's a crap writer.

    What utter rot. If the Muslims wanted Rushdie dead, he would be long gone by now. This grabbing attention is boring and frankly a big pain.
    Why he gets headlines each time he gets a bout of feeling neglected, I will never understand.
    Must be an extension of the silly season in the media.

    Surprise surprise. Muslim vowing to kill muslim? My God ( sorry, My Allah)! But surely the USA must be involved, after all, the beloved of tea towels and bed sheets are not allowed to commit violence according to the Divine Word as laid down in the Sacred Quaran. Yes, it is definitely the Devil's ( Muslim's version) work. So now it is simple, USA= Devil so therefore the fatwa is ok because the Towel Heads can carry on regardless in the knowledge they are carrying out the will of Allah by fighting the devil and his machinations, Simple eh?
