2. A free market will naturally ensure that land is put to its most economic use. Look how much prime agricultural land was destroyed by an artificial credit bubble created by the ECB. Land that otherwise would have been used to grow food was instead used to develop housing estates as this was more profitable due to the distortion in the economy. If industrial conglomerates buy up the land and establish vast commercial farms Great. Vast economies of scale and increased automation means much cheaper food.

I would put it to you that the countryside is worth more to a nation than merely a location in which a race to the bottom in generating profit occurs. No?

3. How does it help protect the enviroment? we already have environmental regulations.

Two words. Biodiversity. Hedgerows.

4. Why should "families on the land" be subsidised at the expense of everyone else? Maybe if they werent regulated to the hilt they could actually make a decent living without relying on subsidies. If anything needs to be addressed its how regulation drives up the costs of production.

Because they maintain both self sufficiency with food and the current fabric of the european countryside, which I at least not not soon swap for the vast swathes of corporate agricultural wastelands seen in the USA.

Earlier on Six One William Hague and Eamon Gilmore were claiming that Iran was developing nuclear weapons - no counter view was given except for the generic 'Iran denies the charges'.

This is bordering on pro-war propaganda as the latest sanctions have increased the chances of conflict between Iran and the US/EU/Israel.

Without the one-sided reports on fictional WMD and Saddam-Al Qaeda links there is little chance people in the US and UK would have supported the oil war in Iraq.
