UK admits it spied on Russia using fake rock

    Remember this?

In 2006 British media said this:

BBC NEWS | Europe | Two held in Russia-UK 'spy' case

"bizarre allegations about a "spy rock"" - BBC

"When we have stopped guffawing about the alleged British spy rock in Moscow, a couple of serious questions will remain." - Guardian

    In 2012 they said this:

BBC News - UK spied on Russians with fake rock

Guardian - Britain admits 'fake rock' plot to spy on Russians

I'm sure there is a thread on here somewhere of people saying the story is daft and wondering why the Russian's made it up.

Is it like the one they used to film the pride of lions a couple of years ago, even the lions figured that one out!

So the Great Game' between the Brits and the Rooskies continues. It has survived Tsarism and Communism and will outlive 'Putinism'.

Interesting that the Brits were allegedly funding 'pro democracy' groups. I wonder does that now include the Russian CP? On the other side of course there must still be a fair amount of FSB assets around the world who originally worked for Soviet intelligence for ideological reasons. I'd imagine they are not fulfilled employees

Not surprising, I mean what else does MI6 do? Drive around all day in Aston Martins with hidden missile launchers?

Governments spy on each other all the time, I would be surprised if Russia wasn't doing the same.

But the Russians do it with more style.

Remember this? BBC NEWS | UK | Timeline: Litvinenko death case

One of a string of incidents over the past 20 years. Cold War is over my ass.

The way the two States carry on you'd wonder how a war hasn't started.

Intelligence is one of the means to prevent war. A certain level of penetration has generally been tolerated as a means of conveying information to the opposition. Not unlike the IRA back door to the Brits even at the height of things. In earlier times court diplomats were in effect intelligence agents who were the conduit of messages as well as cultivating their own sources.

Indeed the CIA and Brits were in a bit of a panic in the 80s when they ralised from their sources in KGB that Andropov was convinced that Reagan was planning a per emptive nuclear strike! You can imagine that the wires were humming in an effort to dismiss that notion. What did work was that Soviet overseas operatives realised that Andropov was off the wall and so did nothing to bolster that view in the Kremlin.
