Israeli FM Pushes Bill to Bar Arabs From Parliament

Israeli FM Pushes Bill to Bar Arabs, Ultra Orthodox Jews From Parliament
MP Matalon Says Conscription 'Part of the Israeli Ethos'

The latest in a long line of efforts at barring the nation’s Arab minority from public office came out of Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s party today, with a new bill that would bar anyone who wasn’t conscripted by the military from being in parliament.

MP Moshe Matalon, from Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu Party, defended the move, terming conscription “part of the Israeli ethos,” adding that those who were not conscripted should not be in parliament because they are “supposed to be role models.”

In practice, this would oust the entire Israeli Arab community from parliament, as they are neither conscripted nor in large measure even allowed to serve in the military. It would also bar members of Israel’s Ultra Orthodox Jewish community from parliament, since they are likewise immune from conscription.
Would you like to know more?

Religious crackpots in all countries are now the biggest threat of all to the freedom of mankind. They are in the US (tea party types), all over the Arab world (Iran, the rise of Islamic parties in the North Africa after their spring revolt, Turkey, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan) and Israel. We in Europe must stand up for and promote secular democracy all over the world.

The greater threat to the mainstream in Israel are the Orthodox Jews and to a great extent their holding the balance of power for the past decade or more have thwarted any consiliatary efforts with the Palestinians.

If one were to remove the Orthodox Jewish Parties, then the hardline soundbites from 'more moderate' politicians could cease as they would not be trying to maintain fragile coalitions.

Incidentally, many more Israeli Arabs have served in the Israeli army than Orthodox Jews.

Israeli-Arabs are "exempted" from performing military service. Eyelight must have confused the meaning of "exempted" with "barred". I know..... big words.

Anyway, recruitment to the IDF from the Israeli-Arab has been soaring lately.

    Soared to.......................300.

"The army refused to provide accurate figures, but the number of recruits is estimated to have increased by 50 to 100 from the beginning of the year, bringing the total number of recruits in 2008 to some 300."
