The Religious Zionist community works. That is, it combines religious observance and engagement with the secular, modern world. There are exceptions with regards to Hardal. The bulk are middle class, professionals, and can be found at high levels in commerce, the military, Information Technology and things the Haredi sector more often avoids. Many of the settlers in Judea and Samaria are commuting professionals. The image of the guys in Hebron or out on hilltops would not be typical. Pay a visit to the productive town of Ariel and see.

Alas, these aren't the only tensions in mainstream Israeli Jewish society, as the recent firing of an economist has shown:

And quite right he was fired for making comments like that. Israel is made of of people from many different backgrounds. Absorbing Jews from Russia and Ethiopia was a huge national challenge and that is what Zionism is all about. Israel, in the last twenty years also absorbed Jews from the central Asian states of the former Soviet Union. These people came or were brought to Israel and they couldn't speak Hebrew and as such they faced the kind of discrimination that others who come to Ireland or England or america etc. who can't speak English. Like everywhere else, all immigrants face some discrimination.

In Israel all immigrants from Holocaust survivors to georgians, to Indians, North Africans, Ethiopians etc. experience prejudice based on ethnicity, economic class, how long they've been in Israel etc. But immigrants to any country will have similar stories of discrimination. And like immigrants to other countries, where the native language is not their first language, immigrants to Israel face discrimination. And because workers from other countries are not fluent in Hebrew their bosses and supervisors underestimate their abilities. It's particularly difficult in hospitals where patients speak Hebrew, Arabic, Russian and many different Ethiopian languages. It's part of the price immigrants pay when they move to any country whose main language is different. And because they couldn't speak the language, job opportunities were not there and many had to live on welfare, which like anywhere else is a cause of discrimination. And in schools children who could not speak Hebrew were at a disadvantage too. Many intelligent children lost the chance to shine becuase they couldn't speak the language and this caused many to drop out of school early.

But it's all changing. These Russian and ethiopian Jews did integrate well when they started to settle down in Israel. There's still a way to go, but it's understandable that when this economist says "white society dominates" he deserves to be fired. The Russians and Ethiopians are only in Israel a short time and in that time they have had to adapt to living in Israel and learning Hebrew etc. When the irish went to America or Britain first they didn't walk straight into the top jobs. They took jobs on buses, on the roads, on building sites etc. But their children who were born there didn't. When the pakistanis and jamicans went to England first they didn't walk straight into top jobs. They worked at whatever jobs they could get to give their British born children opportunities. And the children of these Russian and Ethiopian immigrants to Israel won't be taking those kinds of jobs either. They will be getting opportunities that their parents didn't have. That economist was an idiot to say what he did.
    Fight terror, support Israel!
