Egypt: This time p.ie doesn't care!!

Last spring, p.ie was a buzz with posts and comment on the Tahrir Square uprising. Joy at the ousting of Mubarak was unconfimed, especially amongst those who were uneasy about Egyptian collusion with the US and Israel in Gaza.

Funnily, those of us who were less chuffed at what was happening were told to get with the programme and back the people, unconditionally.

Mubarak left the gaff, all was well, much posturing and media analysis occurred and then we all lashed off out the road to Benghazi for Arab Spring: Part 2 and started foaming at the mouth to get Ghaddaffi out the door.

    But.................

We are still looking at unrest in Cairo, Tahrir Square is stuffed tonight, hundreds have died and a new PM, close to Mubarak, is being foisted on the country by the guys with the nice uniforms and the shiny guns.

Many suspect that the Army is delaying things because of the certainity that any elections will be won handsomely by the Muslim Brotherhood, possibly leading to moves to a Shariah State in the very near future. The MB is not supporting the protests, indeed counter protests in favour of the Army have also been held.

Where to now for the people of Egypt? Will the Army cling to power or allow a full transition to a vote?
Will the MB support a secular democracy or is their aim more theocratic?

Do we care? Or are our little financial difficulties occupying our minds to the exclusion of the crisis in the Land of the Pharoahs?

It's actually really heartening that they haven't been gullible enough to think that Mubarak's exit was the end of the affair. Of more concern is the future of the Christian Copts under whatever new regime takes power - their treatment in recent weeks, the killings by state forces in particular, was scandalous and very worrying. It was encouraging to see the number of Muslim locals who came out in their support despite the security forces' attacks.

TBH I really dont get what their giving out for.

They are having elections next week with a new president sworn in next year. If they think the elections are rigged then protest. But protesting now complaining they want elections when there just a few days away is silly.

Anyhow I think all attention has gone to Syria.

It took them a very long to realise that the army was hoodwinking the population
In the free world, almost everyone was aware that the army appointed Mubarrak in the first place
So getting rid of Mubarrak was no progress at all
The army controls a huge proportion of industry in Egypt so they wont go without a real fight
So hopefully the population have realised that now

They're angry that there has been over 10,00 arrests and ethic cleansing of Christians.

"You're in the Oval Office and Raul Castro calls. What would be your response, Congressman Paul?" "Well, I'd probably ask him what he wants."

Its hard to know exactly what these protesters can achieve right now

Let the Elections be held 1st

But Egypt could fracture at the rate its going

    - and that would Blow the rest off the stage in terms of strategic importance...

Yes, elections are planned and will, in all likelihood, take place.

Will the Army cede power if, as expected, the Muslim Brotherhood win those elections?

Many in Egypt are not so sure, and many more would support the Army in those circumstances.

As usual, the BBC have a good round-up article here: BBC News - Egypt protests: Mass rally in Cairo ahead of election

The Grauniad has a good article on the counter protest here: Pro-regime rally denounces Egypt's 'enemies' | World news | The Guardian

The USA seem to feel that the MB represent no threat, Obama calls to the Army to stand down forthwith: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/26/wo...e.html?_r=1&hp

So, whither Egypt? Whats gonna happen, folks?

Seen on here today the USA has their new carrier with 80 odd jets parked
    just outside syrian waters.
The new noisy neighbours are already there.

Ive read elsewhere that the Russians have armed the Syrians.

    WW3 could be getting closer.
