The catholic religion is not the only religion in Africa as you well know. well the new wave of homophobia in africa is arguably derived from western missionaries as is the lack of contraception. They're two rather destructive things. Granted, the availability of American and Soviet weaponry are probably more destructive on the ground.

To now blame western missionaries for homophobia attacks is total lunacy. Firstly there are millions of Muslims in Africa a religion that is not known to be gay friendly. Secondly African culture is very much male dominated, in some tribes there are ceremonies where young men are circumcised and head off to the mountain or bush camp for three weeks in order to become a man, and upon their return the celebrations are all about being a heterosexual man.
