Chirac and De Villepin 'given $20m by African leaders'

French ex-President Jacques Chirac, and presidential hopeful and former PM Dominique de Villepin were given $20m by African leaders, partly to finance election campaigns, a lawyer alleges.

The lawyer, Robert Bourgi, said he was personally involved in handing Mr Chirac briefcases full of cash.

    All just allegations, you understand.

The grass is always greener on the other side.
Knowing what we know about corruption Irish-style, does it still pale into comparison with many of our european partners ?

Oh the old pompe-à-fric. Nothing new here. France still cosiders the Francophone African nations to be part of it's sphere of influence. I dare say who ever was passing the money to the two buckos was simply paying for haivng been set up as the local marionnette.

Well it was a long time ago, and there were loads of bribes flying about. Hard to track them all.

Aye, but the cute hoor got a nuerologist to back it up. Of course French politicians are as corrupt as Irish ones but at least hey have the class and the decency to try and hide it well; to lie with sincerity, unlike our own lame ducks who don't seem to care if you believe them or not. 'Go and tell it to a tribunal!!'

Chirac, bizarrely, is well liked in spite of the common knowledge that he is as bent as a fiddler's elbow. Perhaps le gombeen is a more internationaly like creature then we previously thought.
