    Closing Guantanamo????

Well the US just will not give it up. This is too sad. I can not believe that the government insists on keeping this place open!

Bush Team Said to Be Split Over Closing Guantanamo
Cheney Insists There Are No Plans to Shut It Down for Now

WASHINGTON (June 12) - The White House is split over whether to close a U.S. jail in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a Republican lawmaker said on Sunday, as TIME magazine reported a top al-Qaida suspect interrogated there was made to bark like a dog and kept awake with pop music by Christina Aguilera.

Some Bush administration officials want to close the facility to end a debate over allegations of prisoner abuse, U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, chairman of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, told "Fox News Sunday."

The military detention camp for terrorism suspects has been criticized as a modern "gulag" by Amnesty International, and it has become a hated symbol for many Muslims.
"The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood."
    Martin Luther King, Jr.

I think that it is disgraceful that the US government pays for a Koran for every detainee, if they paid for a bible for every detainee in US prisons there would be shreaks about the religious right over stepping the mark.

Detainees in US prisons have access to funds and opportunities to purchases bibles if they wish. They can also get free bibles from religious insistutions like Gideons.

As the detainess in Guatamano Bay were [rightly or wrongly] taken thousands of miles away from their homeland and relatives and religious institutions, then they don't have the funds and opportunities to obtain their own Korans.

It seems pretty reasonable to me. Perhaps the army should give the prisoners the price of the Koran and allow them the choice whether to purchase one or not. Would that satisfy seperation of church and state concerns? Although it really is much of a muchness.

I'm at least grateful that the Bush administration is split on the issue. It shows that at least a few people in the White House have a conscience!

I'm surprised he left out one important difference between these prisoners and those in Guantanamo Bay. Anyone care to hazard a guess?
