Why do people still think online petitions hold any weight?

Online petitions like regular petitions only have any weight if either those signing are famous and or powerful or if they are extremely numerous, like many hundreds of millions or billions of people.

Online petitions have less weight again because they are easy to sign and also fake. with the old fashioned pen and paper petitions a great deal of leg work had to be placed into acquiring all those signatures. This gave the petitions part of their legitimacy.

They might do, or might not do, but at least its some kind of countable way of people showing their disapproval of the stoning of this woman. A written petition to be passed around the world would be very slow, and like an online one, anybody can sign any name on it.

TEHRAN, Iran — The lawyer for an Iranian woman sentenced to be stoned on an adultery conviction said Monday that he and her children are worried the delayed execution could be carried out soon with the end of a moratorium on death sentences for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
In an unusual turn in the case, the lawyer also confirmed that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was lashed 99 times last week in a separate punishment meted out because a British newspaper ran a picture of an unveiled woman mistakenly identified as her. Under Iran's clerical rule, women must cover their hair in public. The newspaper later apologized for the error.
FOXNews.com - Lawyer: Iran Woman Lashed 99 Times Could Be Stoned to Death Soon

So a British newspaper publishes a photo that the newspaper identifies as this woman. Apparently, it was not. But the Iranian government lashed the woman 99 times for not wearing a scarf while the photo was taken.

Incredible. She will probably be executed later this week though.

When this type of carry on happens in Saudi Arabia there isn't a fraction of the publicity, it is a regular occurrence there.

Any nation still practising capital punishment cannot be regarded as a civilised society.

I see how the western media have ignored that Ashtiani was convicted of Murder ... not just adultery.

If she was found guilty of murder in the US, she could have been executed by firing squad.

PressTV - 'Ashtiani guilty of murder and adultery'

"Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast says the death sentence of a woman convicted of adultery and murder has been suspended."

Iran suspends stoning to death of woman | Irish Examiner

IRANIAN authorities have suspended the sentence of death by stoning for a woman convicted of adultery, the foreign ministry said yesterday,
Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic?
Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But Conscience asks the question - is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular;but one must take it simply because it is right. -MLK
