Tory MP calls for UK to save Iranian teen sentenced to death for sodomy
    By Jessica Geen • August 11, 2010 - 13:30

Share A gay Conservative MP has urged Foreign Secretary William Hague to intervene in the case of an Iranian teenager sentenced to death for sodomy.

Iain Stewart, the MP for Milton Keynes South, called for pressure on Iran to show some "human compassion" in the case of Ebrahim Hamidi.

Mr Hamidi, 18, was sentenced to death two years ago at the age of 16 for an unspecified assault on another man. Homosexuality is illegal in Iran.

Although the alleged victim withdrew his allegation, a provincial court is insisting on the death sentence despite the Iranian Supreme Court rejecting the guilty verdict and execution order.

The judge in the case is using a legal provision which allows for subjective judicial rulings where there is no conclusive evidence.
Iran is making friends with the world again....*sigh*

He said: ”I just hope that Mr Hague is able to speak to the Iranian government and that Ebrahim is saved from such barbaric treatment from his own country.”
The Right Honourable Gentleman seems to have a rather inflated opinion of Britain's influence in the world, and on Iran in particular.

With the exception of the US and Israel, Britain is literally the last country in the world which can influence Iran. As the involvement of Brazil over the woman threathened with stoning has shown, Iran is not immune to foreign pressure. However, given that Britain is right at the forefront of every round of sanctions against Iran and every condemnation of its 'nuclear programme' - as well as its historically being a greater enemy of Iran than even the US - there is absolutely zero reason why anyone in Iran would pay the slightest bit of attention to William 'Fetus' Hague.

How about a trident missile attack from a Royal navy vessel off shore? I bet that would persuade the stone-age feckers!

I note that you do not condemn the barbaric sentence imposed by the Iranian courts

Is the execution for male rape or homosexual sexual activity? The article isn't clear on that.

It is a barbaric sentence, and I hope the Iranian people will overturn these barbaric laws. But, it is certainly not an excuse for another Anglo-Saxon genocide in Iran.

I note that you don't either. Nor does the OP. What's this anyway? You have to indulge in some sanctimoneous hand-wringing before expressing an opinion (assuming schoolboy wet dreams about Trident missiles and 'stone age feckers' constitute an opinion)?

I would have thought it went without saying that this sentence is despicable (and if it doesn't go without saying, I'll say it: this sentence is despicable). But if some Tory MP thinks Britain - which has cheerled for every action against Iran for the past several years - has the slightest influence on anyone in Tehran, he needs to be reminded that Britannia doesn't rule the waves anymore.

No they don't, but they do have America's ear and a lot of clout in the UN.

Iran will be condemned throughout the western world if they carry out this execution - and quite rightly so! Hopefully, their own moderate citizens will bring pressure to bear on the extremist mad mullahs.
