He's retired. He's simply expressing the belief that the US armed forces held for over 75 years. I think he's wrong, but it's a little unfair to demonise him when his thinking is clearly a product of this man's army. A belief which is tacitly approved by Obama with his refusal to get rid of Don't Ask Don't Tell and let gay soliders openly serve.
The Dutch can be as outraged as they like btw, it doesn't change the fact that their army were a joke during Srebrenica.
These kind of statements just make the US look more and more like some kind of very right-wing religious fundamentalist state, much like what you'd expect to find in the middle east.
It's quite bizarre to hear a statement like that from someone who is in a senior position in what is supposed to be a 21st century western country.
It's more like something you'd have expected to hear in the 1930s!
The fact is they drove away, and a massacre followed.
Orientation of any sort had nothing to do with it.
Were there many "gay" soldiers in Rwanda?
Nonsense comment by that general, but perhaps the agenda being pushed for the US forces is different.
But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
Well, after rading reports of this I don't think that is true.
I think he is saying that is what Dutch military commander(s) told him. I can see no mention of his own personal professional opinion.
General John Sheehan said he had been told by senior Dutch military officials that this was partly because some of the Dutch soldiers were gay.
I'm not saying he's a demon. I'm just saying he's a f___ing eejit and I'd be deeply deeply embarrassed if such a man attained high office in the Irish army. You can't blame the wider US army - it's not as if he lived a monastic like existence spending his last several decades with soldiers only.
There is all manner of explanation for this.
One is that Dutch commanders may have been bemoaning the "pacification" of the Dutch armed forces, as examplified in part by approach to gay recruitment.
I could see that makes sense. I couldn't see US marines allowing a foreign force to disarm them without resistance. They are animals, but deliberately trained to be so.
