Don't sink by night off the South Coast

I have posted in the Foreign Affairs section, because it seems anything that happens past Welly Boot depth off the coast of this country is of little concern to our government.

As if it isn´t bad enough that the Naval Service is being threatened with the denial of replacement vessels for it´s clapped out fleet having already been stripped of it´s helicopter capability.

It is the intention of the government to abdicate responsibility for saving lives at sea by night off the South Coast. Surely if there is a need for a helicopter off the south coast based in Waterford, there is a need for it to operate by night also. Or do SAR operations only happen in daylight hours lately?

This is a disgraceful, cynical, thoughtless way of saving a few quid. I hope there is enough of a backlash in the South East to make these inept people bin this idiotic decision.

You must understand that the one million saved is needed to pay off the pals. There are a few more who need their pensions enhanced as they sail off into the sunset.
    Something's gotta give.

And fishermen from the south of Ireland are expendable! If they must get lost, they can do it by day.

    Dont worry

The good old RAF, Royal Navy and UK coastguard will come to the rescue.

1 million euro eh? - surely we could find the money somewhere.

We could. But we have other places to put it.

Berties's pension and car and gárda drivers and his expenses and the tax he should have paid on the sales (?) of his book and the refurbishment of his Dáil office and the tribunal lawyers ............

You´ve hit the nail on the head.

And lets not forget the Royal National Lifeboat Institute.

Then there was also the case of the Russian Navy spilling Heavy Fuel Oil only 50 miles off the Cork coast last year and the Royal Navy being first on scene.

It seems that this government with it´s pauper mentality is quite happy for our benign and helpful larger neighbour to take responsibility for protection and management of our coastal waters and EEZ. The reduction of the CG helicopter service to just 12 hours per day shows how little interest they have in management of Irish natural assets and indeed saving lives.

If it was a few square miles of County Louth being left to the PSNI to patrol for 12 hours each day to save a million there would be uproar. There mightn´t be much money left in the jar after paying off developer losers and buddies of FF, but surely this is a matter of sovereignty.

Dempsey should hang his head in shame.

RTÉ say the overall contract price is €500 million. This removal of night cover is said to save one million a year.

That's about what we pay for two/three TDs including their support costs.

This at a time when other public bodies in the region are funding efforts to re-establish ferrry links to Swansea, sailing mostly at night.

'Range achieved by current (Sikorsky S61) helicopters within one hour by day from current SAR bases: Dublin, Waterford, Shannon and Sligo Airports.

    (15 minutes readiness, 45 minutes flight = 75 nm = 86 statute miles)'

The map on that report shows that only the Waterford-based aircraft has the offshore route of the Cork - Swansea ferry within that range.

Are we getting a bit too precious here? Waterford is c. 100k from Cork, 130k from Shannon and 140k from Dublin. Many parts of the coast are further that that from one of the designated bases. If it wasn't for the obvious political pull, would it be an SAR base at all?
