    Danish riots

The lovely Danish capital Copenhagen has turned into a riot-zone during the weekend as the police and protesting youths have clashed. The row is about the youth-house squatted by the young protesters being promised by the Municipality of Copenhagen to be sold to a religious organisation.

The Norrebro-area of the city near the world-famous Christiania has always been a place of activism on a higher scale.

There have been demonstrations in Stockholm and Helsinki in support for the Danish protesters. In both capitals outside the Danish embassies, there have been very angry scenes.

However, Copenhagen is not the only riot-city in the Baltic sea states this weekend. There have been demonstarations in St.Petersburg against thre decision by the Russian authorities to ban the popular liberal Jablonko-party from taking part in the local elections. The reasons given for such a ban were so far-fetched as to strain credulity. Jablonko has traditionally been a powerful base for Jablonko(meaning apple-tree).

The ban on Jablonko is sen in the Baltic metropolis as another show of president Putin`s autocratic measures. Even though Putin himself is from St.Petersburg and so is his likely successor Sergei Ivanov, they have little concern for their hometown.

What exactly is the riot about? Isn't squatting illegal?
A P.ie moderator stated this on June 25th 2010: P.ie tolerates very broad free speech, and thus allows sectarian bigotry etc

A popular youth-house in Copenhagen is being closed down and it is being sold to a religios organisation. The Municipality of Copenhagen owns the house and it can do with it whatever it wants but many people have protested against the move and have squatted the house and things have escalated into clashes between the youth and the Copenhageb police-force. Many rioters undoubtedly have little clue what the question is all about but rioting is fun.

However, a very serious miscalculation on part of Copenhagen decision-makers. The alternative to these kind of youth-centres is too often the street.

Good on the rioters. Smash the pigs.

The Danish government needs to listen to the people.
