49 million Americans lack Food Security - A Million Children Hungry

Report: More Americans going hungry - washingtonpost.com

In 2008, the numbers of Americans who don't always have enough food shot up.

The number of Americans who lack dependable access to adequate food shot up last year to 49 million, the largest number since the government has been keeping track, according to a government report released Monday that shows particularly steep increases in food scarcity among families with children.

In 2008, the report found, nearly 17 million children -- more than one in five across the United States -- were living in households in which food at times ran short, up from slightly more than 12 million children the year before. And the number of children who sometimes were outright hungry rose from nearly 700,000 to almost 1.1 million.
Over 20% of families with children experienced food shortage.

The US system, in spite of economic supports for agriculture, is not able to feed its people.

    No - thats north korea
The USA has plenty of food, it is just that the people cannot afford it.

Although, whilst I've no doubt there is genuine poverty in the states, I always wonder how many of these poor people have new car payments or have bought stuff they really don't need.

Is it your reflex reaction to always blame the poor for their situation?

    No.
But I have found theres always more to a situation when you study it closely.

I have also lived in the states where I saw 'poor' people buy new cars.
Poverty can be quite relative at times.

That's quite the revelation. How relative is starvation in your experience?

How many of those unable to provide food for their families, would have passed an adoption suitability test ?

Perhaps much of the blame should attach to the low quality parents, rather than to "the system"

I'd say you would have to be starving before any monthly repayments for a new car or george foreman grill or anyother unnecessary pieces of crap.
If you were not starving before that, but starving after that, then it is your fault.
