Seems the USSR wasn't that different from the US when it came to race in the 1960's. At least the US was moving in the right direction then.

FFS, Stalin as Commissar for Ethnic Minorities in the 1920s drew up the SSR's/ASSR's/Oblasts and Okrugs to cater for the many different ethnic groups in the USSR. The Jews were given a homeland in the Amur Region (Biorbidzhan) in the 1920s long before Israel came into being. The Jewish Autonomous Oblast is still there and thriving. Even the Volga Germans has their own ASSR. It was payback to many of the nationalities who had supported the Bolsheviks in the Revolution and Civil War. Many prominent non Russians went on to serve in the higher echelons of the Soviet administration, Beria (Georgian), Kaganovich, Zinoviev, Kamenev (Jews) Kruschev (Ukrainian) and Stalin (Georgian) as was Eduard Shevernadze, Haidar Aliyev (Azeri), Dzerzhinsky (Polish) and Alfreds Rubiks (Latvian) who is now an MEP.
How in the name of Moses was the USSR racist. Far from it. t couldnt be, it was made up of so many different nationalities.
