Gorbachev Advises Obama to Withdraw From Afghanistan

Mikheil Gorbachev, the last head of state to organize the withdrawal of a failed occupation from Afghanistan, has some advice for President Barack Obama: get out while the getting’s good.

Soviet troops flee Afghanistan in the late 1980s“There is no prospect of a military solution,” Gorbachev warned, “what we need is the reconciliation of Afghan society – and they should be preparing the ground for withdrawal rather than additional troops.”

Unfortunately, I don't think the Yanks have any intention of leaving...

They probably won’t leave, not for some time anyway. They need some sort of a war on a continuous basis to keep their military on its toes, try out new weapons and tactics etc.

Not just hte Soviets, but EVERY foreign power that has interfered in Afghanistan has come a cropper. No reason whatsoever to think the Yanks will be any different.

But mostly the US and Brits need continual war to keep their own populations in mental subjugation.

It's odd isn't it? Generally the anti-American writers on this site bemoan American foreign policy and reduce it to "it's all about oil". Here there is no oil. Maybe they are in Afghanistan for altruistic reasons? It's about time people realised that pax americanus is, on the whole, a good thing.

Wow. Now you're processing 2 possibilities at a time. Actually, as is well known, Afghanistan is on a number of possible pipeline routes from Central Asia, and as such is of strategic significance.

Afghanistan is also home to the world's massice heroin trade; lots of money to be made here.

And by the way, what exactly is Pax Americana anyway? It seems pretty damned violent, corrupt and aggressive to me.
